BIO

is a multidisciplinary artist, working in photography, performance, drawing, and painting. She is perhaps best known for black-and-white photographs of herself engaged in private performances. Associated with the tradition of Body Art, Almeida’s work addresses her own body and the use of the female body in art history, such as in her series, For Study for Inner Improvement (1977).

Almeida was born in Lisbon, Portugal, and was the daughter of sculptorLeopoldo de Almeida. She studied at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts before moving to Paris, and having her first exhibition in 1967. In 1969, she began working in photography, having her husband take the photographs of her while she performed, which became her signature method of working.
